Here are a few questions I’ve been asked about the proposed youth project:

Q. How does the youth get from riding round a school playground to full blown cyclist?

A. Riding in a traffic free environment will give kids a start in showing them how to ride their bike safely and confidently, getting their position sorted, let them know what races are available to them and give them advice on equipment and training. The coaching could be targeted at specific races, for example cyclo-cross races. This is likely to happen in a park somewhere, so we wouldn't be tied into riding round and round a playground. I'm sure you agree that it would be great to have a few youth members in our own cyclo-cross event next year.

Q. Is the idea to encourage the youths to participate in club as they are or would there be separate rides for them?

A. The idea would be to have youth activities separate from our current club activities. However, I thought we may be able to run some adult coaching sessions alongside the youth coaching. If we can get a decent facility with a large tarmaced area we could have a short time trial on a tight course similar to the training last year on the industrial estate. Just ideas at the moment and we'll have to see how it pans out, but hopefully it gives you an idea as to how I'm currently thinking.

Q. If they are to go on clubruns what are the added responsibilities (if any) or requirements (ie Police checks, first aider etc.) of a clubrun leader when say 4 under 16s turn up for a clubrun?

A. If they wanted to come on a club run they would have to have an adult responsible for them (probably a parent), so the responsibility would be with that adult and not the ride leader. Police checks wouldn't be necessary when they come on a club run. They would be necessary if you were helping with the coaching sessions on a regular basis, but these checks would be free and are as easy as filling out a form (BC would administer this).

Q. Will parents of the kids be encouraged to take up cycling and participate in maybe family runs so they can take care of their own kids.

A. I would definetly want to encourage the parents to get involved in the club so that they could help out and possibly get involved in riding with us too. This would be a good way of insuring the club continues to grow and would be useful in terms of volunteers to run youth sessions.

If anyone has any more questions, please post them here or email me.

Phil

p.s. thank you everyone for your support so far. I am collecting a list of names of everyone wanting to get involved, so let me know if you’re interested in helping in any way.
