BBC are putting together a piece on cycle safety and wondered if any of us would be prepared to wear a helmet cam (provided by them) on the way to work next week. The inquiry is below but need to add they want it doing asap, probably Tuesday, so let me know if you can help and I'll set the wheels in motion. Sounds interesting and a worthwhile exercise if you're interested. Heres their brief:

We’d like to document one of your members’ cycle to work – to highlight the dangers that they have to contend on the route. Ideally this would be through a busy area of Manchester. We’re aiming to do this on either Tuesday or Wednesday next week, so would love to get this nailed down asap if possible! We could provide the equipment, so they wouldn’t have to have any of their own.

Happy to help.

My commute is Didsbury to the city centre.

I would have but at 1.6 miles up the A6 I don't think it's long enough, I'd have done an 18 mile loop at rush our through Manchester but it would not be classed as a ride to work so I guess I'm no good.

Allthough on Tuesdays around 4:30 I cycle 8 miles at around 5pm, not to work, but it's regular journey to where I do my training. shame I'd like to have worn a helmet cam.

This is a good opportunity to show non cyclists what its like, Id definitely be up for doing it riding in from Prestwich into city centre and im sure jerry would as would some of the people from work would.

Ill ask how many he can get hold of and see what we can do. Ive taken his email off the thread but just PM me or Ian if you want it.

As it happens he didnt mind as his email is publicly available anyway as a journalist so was being over cautious.

Sounds like a few of us filming would be good if possible so we can pick the bits that best show what its like. Has anyone else got a camera we can use?

Prestwich to Birchwood here through Worsley Death Roundabout and down the pot holed cart track that is the A6.

Do you get to 'sensor' the footage before release? I do sometimes get a bit, err, distracted, by attractive ladies in cars, at bus stops etc. The fact that it's a skid lid cam may make it a bit obvious when the camera is not pointing in the direction of travel, so to speak....

yeh, fair point well made Bridgey!
also worth pointing out - and I know no Wheeler has EVER done this - but if you end up filming yourself on the commute, wouldnt be a good idea for this to be the first day that you decide to jump red lights, turn left on a red or try and ride at 25mph in a 20mph zone ... !

You'll have to be on best behaviour vis-a-vis the Highway Code as well

Remember to have a rear reflector as well as a light! And amber reflectors on the pedals!

How does that work with SPD's? Are they not road legal?

Never heard anything from this guy..?

Did it ever happen?

Would have caught a very inconsiderate driver nearly ploughing straight through 2 of us cyclists this morning at the main fallowfield crossroads. The main lights are staggered so that cars can turn right before the opposing traffic gets going. The driver in question clearly doesn't realise this, was chancing his way across whilst everyone was moving towards him and nearly knocked 2 of us clean off. Cursing

I saw a segment on BBC yesterday morning re cycling hazards using helmet cam footage - so guess it wasn't needed?

I can give this one a go. A56 Altrincham to Manchester and then Manchester to Altrincham which can be just as entertaining. Of course would have to remember not to look in direction of 'attractive ladies' as in the case of Si.
