The Times have launched a major campaign.

http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/public/cyclesafety/contact/

Whilst its good, It looks unrealistic and I still feel that there should be no additional manifesto - the highway code and common sense lay down all that is needed - its just a sham that these are bypassed and held with little respect.
Stick to the original values and not bullet point BS.

I think its really good that something high profile is happening, its a shame someone always has to die or get badly injured for it to be taken seriously.

The debate goes on about the best way of making cycling safer and in the main i agree with Rother but anything that increases awareness of how vulnerable cyclists are and that drivers need to be really careful is good.

I hope the times journalist still unconscious from being hit by a lorry will recover soon and that a few people listen and change the way they behave in the meantime.

Sadly Rothers - more than half the motrorists in this country don't even know what the highway code is! - never mind how to adhere to or follow it! Don't get me wrong dude - I know were you are coming from and in a more 'sensible'/'thoughtful' and 'caring' world' things would be better! Nothing is going to change without a seriously major overhaul from the top - and let's face this government are only interested if it scores points for them! COMMON SENSE - a word to easily used - but not too often put into practise - would point towards taking a massive leaf out of Hollands book! The bicycle takes presidence over the motor vechile! - But over here it's just not going to happen! A few suggestions though would be:

1. Cycling proficiency tests for all adults who take their car test & refresher courses say every 5 years - link these into insurance policies as well! - it's money that always hurts people!
2. Obviously far better cycle lanes and paths - interlinked to city's.
3. Far better access to train services - for pity's sake what ever happened to the guards van?? - by that i mean storage of bikes etc
4. Increase the fines and prison sentences for careless and reckless driving that causes injury and death - And yes i know that this sounds like 'After the horse has bolted' - but we've got to start somewhere!
5. Far more input in schools re cycling and the healthy aspects of it - but also incude the parents!

Ok that's enough of a rant from me! we can only do our very best to teach and educate others - the CTC are trying their best, but yeah more needs to be done! Stay safe out there! x

Whilst I welcome any drive to make it safer, the fact that it took one of their own to be put in a coma and remain there for the last 3 months hardly shows that they thought it a prioirty :-/
