I'm quite keen to have a ride over there at some point bearing in mind it's only ~25 miles from the Gateway.

Does anyone know any decent routes to get there other than riding the A6 all the way (not that I've ridden the A6 any great distance, is it an alright road to ride on all the way?)

Anyone else potentially interested in going along too? Was thinking of heading over there, stopping off in Hope, refuel, and then see how I get on back up the hill. (I would rather do it the opposite way round but hey ho).

Probably some time mid-late Feb, Sunday morning jobby.

A6 is ok to to ride on, but there's always lots of traffic, so I don't really like it and will avoid it if possible.

Problem is either side of the A6 is quite hilly, so it'll take you longer than you think to ride to Winnats and back. Depends how much time you've got obviously. You'll need to go via Marple then either New Mills or Hayfield to the North of the A6, or go over the Brickworks to Kettleshulme then Whaley Bridge and Chapel en le Frith to the South.

Yep. One of my favourite rides is Adlington>pott shrigley>kettleshulme>whaley bridge>chapel-en-lefrith>tideswell>bradwell
That gets you to the Hope valley. From there I either go through Hope and up Mam Tor, or Winnats if I've any legs left. (Not usually....)

I quite like the A6 climb from Hazel Grove to Disley, but bypass the Stocport-Hazel Grove part - via Adswood and Davenport for instance. Then perhaps the Chinley Road to avoid the dual carriageway, up Rushup Edge and circle through Edale and Hope, up Winnats and back through Sparrowpit and Chapel.

Yeah, I quite like that climb as well actually, it's a good warm up climb.

Are you going to post it as a ride Neal? Cathy may have plans for one that way:

I've got a ride on the list for 5th Feb that's heading over that area.
I'm planning to come back through Edale rather than up Winnats, but there's nothing stopping either a change of plan or splitting up at Hope and re-grouping at the top of Winnats

You changed your route then Nev? It was a Spud-Riley-alike before.

yeah - but I did that route yesterday and the road over Axe Edge Moor is due to be shut next month.
The alternative to that involves too much main road for my liking so I decided to save that for another day and do something different.

Unfortunately I'm away from Manchester both the weekends of 5th and 12th February otherwise I'd have definitely gone along.

I'm going to have a play around online and sort out a route and post it up for late Feb/early March.

I'm a little worried that I'll be the one struggling at the back and won't be doing much leading though... hehe

Hi neal and nev,
I'm organising a ride for 1st sun in march as sportive intro for mow cop in cheshire cat. Was going to tackle winnats in low pressure way, so women and beginners have practice of the gradient before the day. Will be posted as intermediate ride for all, but not intended as hill climb competition!
Whether you both or either of you, want to share this ride, I don' t know? The way my present form is, I'll be the one leading from the rear of the group!
Hope to better by then, though!
I'm working on the Leek moorlands at present. There is scope for good rides there, when we get a thaw.
Haven't gotten round to posting ride yet - it was written up in the summary of the recent women's' social. Let me know what u think- post or pm me. Cheers!

If you train up Winnats Pass, Mow Cop will feel like a bump, the fact it's known as the "killer mile" on the Cheshire Cat is amusing because nearly every climb in the peak district is harder than Mow Cop, in fact Long Hill is harder than Mow Cop, the 25% bit of Mow Cop last for like 20-30m?

It's called the killer mile because there's a running race that goes up Mow Cop every year called....... the Mow Cop Killer Mile. I've not done it, but it's pretty tough as mile race go I believe.

Hi Cathy,

Unfortuantely I'm in Hertfordshire that weekend otherwise I'd have definitely come along.

The Saturday after after I've entered to 10m TT over at J2/3, whether I get a place or not's another thing, but I might go out on the Sunday for a good run. Post the route up though if you can, I need some inspiration!
