Great ride tonight people. 5 of us out in total, and 5 of us went home... just about
Thanks to Pete for leading. The conditions were really pretty good considering the time of year.
I clocked the average speed at 16mph for anyone interested in what the pace is like. Top speed of 37mph coming down to Alderly Edge. (guess who's got a new Garmin!)
See you again next week!

I agree neal .A great ride .Looking forward to next week.At this rate i will definately improve. The intermediate rides were just what i was looking for and riding in the dark requires great concentration skillls.Perfect way to break the week up being on a wed.Gonna try and attend on a regular basis work permitting.I think some of the women would find this suiting their needs .Thats if they fancy the scary pitch black country lanes.LOL.

Thanks for organising these rides, Pete. As jayne said, they are well placed for a midweek spin, and a good intro to night group riding- which is amazingly, well lit! We really enjoyed getting out.hope everyone rewarmed ok. I was toasty in my wheelers winter jacket. A recommended item!

Yeah ,i love these rides.I think they are perfectly placed in the middle of the week where you can have a couple of days rest after a weekend on the bike.I never fancied riding at night before but in a group it is so enjoyable.Looking forward to the hilly on weds next week .My feet have just about warmed up from last night.

Hi Pete, Gordon here, got to cheadle last night at 7.15pm, thought I had missed you all, saw a group of cyclist coming up to the cross roads in centre of cheadle!! asked them are you "Wheelers", realised they weren't when I saw their cycling tops!! asked them did they see any wheelers at the gateway? not sure was the reply, anyway they said join us if you want , fast tempo ride up and around bollington etc, hmmm , my legs were wrecked from weight training the other night etc, but as they said this, one of them was grinning like a cheshire cat!!! yep ok, well 22mph plus single file up to A6 and then chainy up to Bollington roundabout 25mph plus!! only 4 of us left, the rest were dropped off the back !! all I was thinking was I'm a "wheeler" and there not dropping me!! , then we went back toward poynton, same thing and then chaingang along some country lanes, dropping loads off the back!! went back to the gateway and said my goodbyes, 11 miles home alone knackered, 60 miles for a school night!! they were wearing ken foster cycling top, velo ?? one of them was a 1st cat I believe, power was unbelievable standing out of the saddle at 27mph on the flat next to me chatting away , me on the tank and the rest on carbon bikes . Got to get easier this cycling lark!! seems the better you get the harder it gets !! oh well Rothers pain ride to look forward to!! sorry I missed you Pete, can you pm me your number mate, lost your number when I got my new phone. Gordon

Thank you all for the many positive comments, its nice to know I'm not the only nutter who likes riding in the dark. Gordon, that was the Chorlton lads who picked you up. They don't hang around as you found out, good on you for keeping up, that sounds like a tough course and a quick pace.
This week was cccold. I had heated insoles in & still had frozen toes! Then the batteries in the right foot failed so I felt like an amputee by the time I got home. Andy had to get a hot dog from a petrol station half way round just to keep going. But excellent work by all made a hard task easier so you can all give yourselves a pat on the back. Those of you who didn't turn up missed a good one. Where were Chris 1+2 and Neal eh? Warm in front of the telly maybe.. and all you other new starters? This is what you need to get you going.
Unfortunately I can't make it next Weds so you'll have to look after yourselves, I'll be back out again on the 8th for a repeat of Week One. Or we could move to Thursday so that I can still get a go. What do you think?
Cheers, P.

Had a personal commitment this Wednesday over in Hertfordshire so couldn't make it, would rather have been cycling though that's for sure!
Snow levels permitting I would be up for a ride middle of next week! Would probably struggle with Thursday but Wednesday is alright me for if there's a few of us keen for a ride. Will see you on the 8th Pete!

That was a good read, ignore the keyboard warrior below
No wonder you're coming along so well with some of these rides you're getting on. I rekon you'll be battering me up the hills now!
You going to manage to get round H's sometime and have a go on the computrainer? I would not mind doing that 16.99 miler @ 7% with you, someone put me on 10 mile @ 11.5% the other day! edited by Mr T on 07/02/2012

Get well soon Jayne. I was out today, the windchill is bitter so wrap up warm. Main roads are ok if you keep out of the gutter, side roads may differ so keep a sharp eye out.

Only other person to turn up tonight was Danny, a new potential recruit.
Decided not to take to the hills but went over to Cheadle for circuits and do some laps waiting for the rest of the boys to turn up.
Very cold night, andy was reading -4.2oC on his garmin! My bidon was frozen solid by the end anyway!
Good session though, just about warmed up now! edited by NealW on 08/02/2012

I will now admit to wimping out tonight, after being out on moors working this morning and watching the water running off cows' feet as they exited the building freeze instantly on the yard outside....and yesterday I had a debate with a colleague as to whose truck had slid furthest downhill on its own, having been brought to a standstill by sheets of run-off ice refrozen from Monday's thaw - well, not a standstill, but wheelspin - even in 4x4 in low ratio with diff lock! - on 25% minor roads around Leek. It's quite scary being in a truck sliding backwards down a 25% hill - esp. if you own it! The farmer at the bottom of the hill came to help - but the grit pile was frozen: I now have a bag of grit in the truck along with the snow shovel! My colleague went head first down a similar hill, towards a woman who had jackknifed her horsebox on a similar ice sheet... and spent best part of an hour shovelling half frozen mud off the verge onto the road to get a grip...all this in daylight...so I wouldn't want to hit this type of ice at night on a bike...'cos you can't really see it in time from a vehicle during the day.
I feel like I wimped out of riding tonight tho'. I really need the training - being like a retarded snail at present. Jayne, sorry you're ill - these winter viruses are a pain, I've only this week stopped spluttering (week 4!). Pat's in Scotland on the hills, but rode to Oban today, and said it was cold and a bit rainy. There is apparently a brand new 8' wide perfect tarmac cycle track, parallel to the road but traffic free - from Glen Coe to Oban - and he said you can race along it on a roadbike - he only met 1 horse and 2 walkers on the whole return ride. Shame the money-earning stuff sometimes stops the fun.
