This sort of thing has happened to me before in this shop, is it just me? Stopped off on my way to work this morning to buy an inner tube, as one does. 700x23c specialized tube please. £5.99 please. Blimey, thats steep I say. No, cheapest in town he says. Well the Edinburgh bike coop do them at £3.99. Do you do any discount for BCF or CTC or Man......... kaching the till goes. Sorry mate too late. There's your change. Assistant goes back to constructing a space suit out of bubble wrap to entertain his mate.

Not just you, a sorry shadow of their former self imho. I use Evans if I need to get stuff in town these days. I know all the humbug about them being a big chain blah blah blah but the service is okay, they do at least try to help you, and you can get very good prices using the internet price match they offer. The last few times I went in Harry Halls the assistants gave a good impression that they thought they were doing me a big favour by serving me. No doubt they'll be glad to know I've relieved them of the effort it involved by not going back.

Sheesh, £5.99 for 1 inner tube! And they wonder why the 'local' bike shop is suffering, not surprised with prices like that...
Must admit though, the bubble wrap space suit sounds kinda cool

I agree. I might pop in later and ask if they sell bubble wrap cycling shorts.

Yep! sadly in town evans probably the best bet - further out of course - Eddie McGrath's or Withington cycles, or if in North manchester - by far the best - Gerry Sheilds out at Failsworth - always friendly and helpful - Chris is a great fella and Gerry still the best wheel builder in town!

I went off them when they "recommended" me a solicitor and lied about receiving a referral fee from said solicitors.

In my experience most bike shops are fairly terrible examples of the retail 'experience' but in the interests of balance, HH have actually been pretty helpful on a couple of things for me recently
I agree they can still be expensive though.

Other bike shops worthy of a mention in the town centre if you're looking for one are Keep Pedalling in the northern quarter, Bike Doctor in Rusholme, and Bicycle Boutique.
For those with a penchant for older machinery Bicycle Boutique have large boxes of 'assorted bicyle cr*p' that they let go for a fiver and frequently have complete gems in.

Historically HH's has alwys been a tad on the expensive side - in years gone by it was the mecca for all racing cyclists to get their beloved campag and cinelli gear from! Inner tubes?? - jeez just pay the price if it's an emergency - any other time stock up from your local reliable bike shop! For - hopefully - purely amusements sake I'll share with you all what I have in my saddlebag at the moment:
x2 spare 700c inner tubes a multi tool spare allen keys 4-6m x3 spanners - for pedals and little things etc an adjustable spanner A spoke key A flat scewdriver A Philips scrediver x2 smaller scredrivers A shimano crank remover A TA crank remover A large allen key to remove cranks Spare set of lights - front & back Loose change - approx enough for beer and food! extra set of batteries Zip ties assortment of screws and nuts - various sizes x2 fixed wheel sprockets chain link remover spare chain links deoderant after shave x1 razor A sensible wooly hat x2 bandana scarves wet wipes spare pair of socks and boxers spare short sleeve top leisure shorts Spare pair of gloves spare pair of shades - plus tifosi lens x3 Regatta waterproof - £6.99 from a charity shop in knutsford! Neopreme wind/shower proof Spare brake cable Sapre gear cable Pair of plyers pair of wire cutters Assortment of shorter bits of cable and string Nurofen Horrible power gel sachet! A mars bar! Insulation tape. oh and a padlock or two!
Yep that's about it for the moment - though sometimes I'm out in the winter on my 1970's dawes Horizon - Bought cheap at a jumble sale - now that's got a rack on it with 2 panniers! Just think what extra bits i could fit in there?? - a sensible pair of shoes maybe?...or a hip flask?? Stay safe out there dudes! x
Ps - Rothers - now that's called 'training'! x edited by Jonathan on 20/01/2012

Jonathan, with these particular items are you perhaps contemplating "getting lucky" while you're out riding? Know what I mean Squire? Nudge, nudge. Wink, wink.
