As promised in the pub last night, I'll be leading a couple of rides out to Saddleworth Moor and Holme Moss on the next two Sundays, weather permitting.

They'll be a basic out and back runs, starting at the Hilton, and then heading east* through Ashton. The first will be up and over Saddleworth Moor, then up Holme Moss (at the top of which we'll turn round and go back down) then back up and over Saddleworth Moor for a total of about 3850 feet of climbing over 56 miles.

The week after I'm planning to do the same, only carrying on over Holme Moss and turning round at Torside Reservoir for a total of about 4925 feet of climbing over about 66 miles. (so up both sides of Holme Moss and Saddleworth Moor).

No café stops. The point is to practice going up and down big hills, so we'll take the initial drag out of Manchester quite steadily to warm up properly.

*Geographical blooper corrected 18th Jan.

No, but I do have a certain, um, 'reputation' when it comes to my sense of direction. As in this case, a 180º correction is usually required!

PS: details corrected!

Looks as if the weather will be quite challenging, so please check gears, brakes, steering and tyres. Mudguards preferred!

If you have one, wear a peaked cycling cap under your helmet - it'll help keep the rain out of your eyes / off your glasses.

Thanks to Ben for the tip (a tip given towards the end of a very wet ride? o_0

Hi Richard. Yes, we'll be going past Mossley station (We'll be following the first part of the ride you led last November). It took me about 45 minutes to get there last time, so I imagine we'll pass Mossley Station between about 10:10-10:20/30ish, depending on when exactly we leave and how fast we go.

Nick, I will be joining you on route as riding over from Glossop. Depending on my departure time I should join you Ashton/Staylbridge way.

You are all very brave venturing into the hills with this wind .Hope to join you next sunday but today think i will stay flat .The gusts seem so powerful i am scared that they would blow me off the bike if i went any higher than alderley edge.Good luck everyone ,i am sure it will be great ride.

It is forecast to be very windy tomorrow, so a question to those who know better than I do: At what point does riding over the moors start looking foolhardy?
