Good ride again, thanks people! Sorry about the puncture delay thing, I clocked it at 53 mins 31, which Eugene assures me is the new record to beat.

Don't forget the 3 tubes and the replacement tyre!
always nice stopping for almost an hour in sub zero temperatures
worth mentioning that there were 8 of us out last night. Bonkers

Yeah, though as I said, if you were cold you could have done some sprints to keep you warm!

That's easy for you to say Paul, you kept yourself warm with nearly an hour of pumping action!!!

If it's any consolation, I have blood blisters under two fingernail from forcing the tyre back on. 10 new innertubes ordered as well.

That's not funny! Why so long? Incompetence or bad luck? We discussed puncture repair skills on Monday night! Had one myself on commute home, took over 10 mins. Somne of these bloody tyres are a nightmare to get on.

The tube exploded very loudly on a smooth road with no debris anywhere near. No obvious cause.
Tyre checked, nothing sticking through, no obvious fault. Rim in perfect condition, tubeless rim and anodized black so easy to check for sharp edges etc.
New tube fitted, which I think I pinched when getting the tyre on - poor skills.
Third tube fitted, inflated, exploded as per original.
Tyre reinspected, 1 inch gash next to the bead. Suspect a manufacturing fault as no obvious cause and the setup was used for a few hundred miles a week the last two weeks.
RobL then sprinted home to get a spare tyre, which was fitted and inflated no problem.
Removing the pump unscrewed the valve core, so that had to be refitted and the tyre inflated again.
Mostly bad luck I think, maybe in the daylight the gash in the tyre would have been spotted when inspecting the tyre, but maybe not with it being right next to the bead. The main lesson learned was loud bang = hole in tyre.
As bad as all that sounds, it would have been a total disaster if it had happened 15 minutes later in the middle of nowhere, at least where we were we were near Rob's house and also near a train station!

Sounds very unlucky! I've ditched all my tubes that have that daft screw in part of the valve. I've had and seen far too many deflatated inflates!

I take three tubes out with me on every ride together with a section of old tyre to insert should a tyre rip, powerlinks and am even thinking of a spare gear cable. I work on the principle that everyone is sensible enough to fend for themselves and would not have hestiated in leaving someone behind who could not change a tyre in that time. Hats off to you for sticking with Mr Rockliffe.
I learned it the hard way...
If you do not heed this advice i can offerr you an alternative :

I've got screw in valve cores deliberately so that I don't need different tubes for normal and deep wheels. I can just extend the short valves with an extender. As long as you use the little plastic conti tool (which everyone who was out last night is now aware of1) to screw the valve core in properly it'll stay there...
Main learning from last night (apart from check the tyre more carefully) is to NOT use levers to refit a tyre... No matter how tight the tyre is you can get it on with fingers alone by working your way around from the opposite side and giving you some slack
