Any suggestions for some good UK bike challenges to do this year? Anything you've done and loved or always wanted to do, organised or not? A race element or not is fine but im thinking nice scenery or a good atmosphere.

Got loads of ideas for stuff abroad but limited time off work so looking for more in this country. To give an example, loved the IOM and Oldham mountain TTs last year. Still loving riding my bike and will do some local TTs but not feeling up for PB chasing this year.

One idea from riding with Anita and Becks yesterday was doing an event in each of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. We are all signed up for the Scottish coast to coast adventure race and will probably ride the English coast to coast so just need an Ireland and Wales idea.

I realise thats vague but sure people will have some suggestions.

PS This one is going on my list as soon as the 2012 dates are announced - bike ride AND beer festival : http://www.polocini.com/Kegs-and-legs.html

Surely that would only add to the challenge!

I can highly recommend one of the Whitehaven to Sunderland coast to coast routes.
Don't let the mountain bike aspect put you off. It's more of a leisurely type ride anyway as the total distance is only about 140 miles.
The route is mainly quiet roads with a bit of off road and some steep bits thrown in. Nothing technical.
The view you'll access are superb!

For an added challenge. Do it in two days.

+1 for that - easily rideable on a touring bike/winter bike. One or two off-road sections are fun on an mtb but can be bypassed by road.

There is a new c2c route called Walney to Wear or something like that which is less trodden and somewhat harder IIRC. Might be worth a look.

There and back in two days?

I did it in 3 days (Workington to Sunderland) 15 years ago, when I was young and daft. I put slicks on my mountain bike and went for it. Being 15 I owned a pair of shorts, a t-shirt and a pertex jacket and either got on with it or stayed at home if it was raining. Unfortunately it poured down on day two as I rode from Penrith to Allenheads, it was literally the coldest thing I've ever experienced, I ended up dropping the group I was with and riding flat out for the last couple of hours as it was the only way to stave off the hypothermia!

I keep meaning to do it again because it's a great ride, but it's an inclusive route that wasn't really designed with club cyclists in mind, so I'd probably make up my own route if I was doing it in two days. I think the route misses out a lot of what's so good about biking in the Lakes, so I would go Hardknott/Wrynose/Kirkstone out of Cumbria, up to Alston, Hartside and then some more hills on the way across to Durham and Sunderland. I'm quite lucky that my parents live in Cumbria and my Grilfriend lives in Durham, so I can make the logistics work quite easily, or the house to house route is a great 90 mile ride.

Take a few weeks and join the 100 dots... http://www.amazon.co.uk/100-Greatest-Cycling-Climbs-Cyclists/dp/0711231206

Or do road C2C route, going east to west to avoid too much sun glare :-)
