This will be my first attempt at racing. So my question for you 'old hands' is which races do you recommend that I enter as a novice? I plan on racing at Ashton as its on my doorstep as well as the City race series at Eastlands, but other than that I haven't got a clue really. All (serious) advice will be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Tony.

Also, someone mentioned there was a race at Cockermouth last year, would like to do that, anyone got details?

There were a few of us novices last year who raced TLI - starting at Salt Ayre in Lancaster (not on this year - though might be replaced by a local series at Ashton, and other venues), moving on to the Cheshire road race series at Lower Withington, then Oulton Park (experience of big bunch racing) and selected other TLI races around and about in between these. These are age group related and not easy but manageable - though you can get high category riders riding them for "training" and ripping everyone's legs off a la Paul Bethell last year. So definitely worth looking at TLI as one option in my view. Its possible to race TLI from March through to mid August and the travelling is not too bad as they are pretty local.
The City race series got some very mixed reviews last year centring round unsuitable surfaces in the corners (gravel) and there were a few crashes as a result for a couple of Wheelers at least so would want to see what improvements they make this year before I consider doing them...
Others who know more about CDNW can comment on those - Cockermouth I think is a CDNW race...Rothers is the man edited by Eugene on 04/01/2012

Cheers mate. I'll take a look at the points series. Think I remember Martin posting that Salt Ayre wasn't running this year for whatever reason. I'm also intending to get to some of the training sessions at Ashton (can someone tell me when these start please) as I want to try and get as much speed in the legs as poss.

Just looked at the Cheshire points series and it looks like its for TT'ers. Am I being daft or am I looking at the wrong thing?

Hi Tony,
The Salt Ayre series has been replaced with a Wheelers series called The Tour of the Circuits. The new series will be TLI as was the old Salt Ayre series which was a fantastic introduction to racing in bunches for newer riders, day membership can be taken out too, so its a pretty inexpensive way to try bunch racing.
There are 4 events as follows;
3rd March at Salt Ayre, LLancaster
Preston Arena 10th March, Preston
Ashton 17th March
24th March at Rhyl.
The aim for Rhyl is to tie it in with a club weekend away, race on the saturday afternoon, curry and beer in the evening and a good clubrun on the Sunday. Everyones welcome even if they're not planning to race, as the circuit will need 3 or 4 helpers. I'll try to get some details for the next social do.
All the circuits are purpose built for bike racing so are pretty safe, plus they all have summer midweek races so you get the chance to see if you like or dislike any of them. As the Salt Ayre races were so popular with the Wheelers riders last year I thought it would be good to keep something going as everyone seemed to enjoy them.
Not heard when the Ashton training sessions start yet, will post as soon as I hear anything.
If anyones got any questions feel free to ask.

While we're on the subject, I have some questions too, I hope not too daft.
At what speed are these races typically run off? By that I mean the typical cruising speed, rather than average speed of the winner.
And over what distance?
And how big are the bunches? edited by Nick_G on 04/01/2012

Hi Nick,
Pretty sure last year they were averaging around 23-24mph, though its a bit more stop start, so at times its cruising a 16mph, next minute its 30odd mph of teeth gritting. The races are all 1 hour plus 5 laps, most circuits are around 1k. Size of bunches based on last year was around 25-35, they are all enter on the line at £10 each. The will be some small pizes for the races, all profits are to charity (Cystic Fibrosis) as in previous years.
Link to last years 1st race below.

Cheers Martin. Looking at the Cheshire race series its looks quite a dear do. £10 on the line for these doesn't seem too costly. (He says). Looking forward to it. Looks like the car may end up with a few extra miles on the clock as well.

Is that a misprint for 'prizes' or a misprint for 'pies'?

You do realise it's £25 for the whole series ( 4 races, marshall 1 ) and not per race

Thats what would do me in! My best 25mile TT last season was over 27mph but I reckon I'd be shelled out of a RR! :-)
_Might_ give the cheshire TLI's a go though for a change this season.

Tony, also have a look at Cat 3/4 BC road races. There's quite a few round here especially with the CDNW league. You might actually find them a bit better than some of the TLI's due to the fact that you're not trying to keep up with Cat 1/2 riders.
To race in TLI or BC races you'll need to buy the relevant racing licence.
I'm not sure the City Race Series will go ahead this year. I was speaking to the guy that organised them last year and he wasn't confident that they'd be going ahead.
Don't be put off by the average speeds. The Oulton Park races are on a good smooth circuit and the average speed was 26mph but you'll be surprised how easy it is in the bunch. It's when you want to try and breakaway or chase down that it hurts! Lol! You've just gotta watch you don't get caught out with the sudden change of pace. I'm sure you'll be absolutely fine.
