I'm planning on riding to Ullswater on 29th December and wondered whether anyone has a good route from Manchester to the Lakes. At the moment I'm looking at Prestwich to Ramsbottom, Clitheroe, Ingleton, Kirkby Lonsdale, Keswick etc. But I don't really know the North Manchester region that well. I'm sure there must be a classic route that some one knows. Any suggestions?

I recommend going via Wallington Fell just past Clitheroe.

Have you considered buying a Garmin 800 to help you get lost?

Thought I'd just use natural survival techniques such as those demonstrated by Ray Mears. Start by using the suns position in the sky, probably have to rely on the position of satellite dishes through Prestwich, then moss on trees. By the time I get to the Lakes I'll switch to navigation by the stars.
