Would anyone have a good suggestion as to a decent pair of winter tyres?

As long as it takes
Need some decent winter rubber, I don't want puncture every 5 yards but at the same time I don't want to be lugging a ton round either.

errm I think what Mr R may have been saying was in relation to previous posts about choice of tyres! It appears that everyone has their very own preferences - but cheap and cheerful but good - Vittoria Rubino's or maybe Schawlbe blizzards - if they are still around? Good luck dude!

Previously have run Vredstien fortezzas all year round.... No issues

Now running my fixed on Specialized Armadillos - far better than them... £50 a pair but stories of them lasting 9000 miles are common place

Ive had armadillos for 4 years - get a new pair each year. Never had a 'proper' puncture - just me bending the valve or something equally silly.
Also rode schwalbe marathon plus for 3 months through Africa (over huge thorns) and no punctures...but they do weigh a tonne.

I've been running Michelin Krylion Carbon's and got through 1 on the front and 2 on the back over about 8000 miles in the last year and never had a puncture (touch wood!).

I use them year round and they are really fast rolling and grip well. In fact they won the Cycling Plus group test last winter for best winter tyre.

I tried the armadillos but found them very heavy thus noticably slower to accelerate and also slippy e.g. spinning the rear wheel going up very steep hills in the wet (seated). They're probably a better commuting tyre. Also had the tread layer delaminate from the casing on one so I changed to Continental GP Four Seasons which are lighter and have more tread for the wet. I used them in Flanders and Paris-Roubaix as well without a single prob and they seemed to be the most popular choice there.

I have been using armadillos too. And can almost count the number of punctures on one hand. Not bad given I travel up and down the A56 most days of the week and used them for cross last year. I think I have had my present set for about two years, which reminds me I must get a new set before the snow comes.

And yes - I know I'm going to regret this - but.....where were you - and exactly what terrain were you traversing over at the given time to get that many punctures? And possibly more intrusively - what were you doing?

Got some Bontrager Race Lite Hardcase after advice on here last year and have been puncture free ever since...* They're not the quickest but are available for £14 each.

* I have a feeling I might regret saying that

My bike (Spesh Secteur) came with Armadillos. I've since changed to GP4000's and haven't had any more punctures - in fact, I think I've had less or even none (kiss of death!) I use the bike as a commuting/winter/wet weather bike.

I found the Armadillos noticeably heavy and sluggish compared to the Conti's...
