My local gym - Longfords at Longford Park in Stretford/Chorlton - are offering to put on Monday night core sessions again this winter. As a regular visitor, Scott Burns will testify to how good they are for cycling, not to mention all-round general fitness, though cant guarantee they will get you a sub 50-minute 25 mile time trial!
However, theyre a lot of fun and we generally had 4-6 of us pretty much every Monday last winter. They go from 8-9pm, cost is £4 and they will start on MONDAY OCTOBER 3. Let me know if you want any more directions/details. cheers

We just had a new leg-press machine delivered by the way Ian.
I'll try to get there as often as I can, not really got any excuses seeing as I live at the Stadium!

yeh, we'll come knocking on your door if you're not there, Paul!! Tony (and anyone else whos interested) - the session involves a good warm-up/stretch (sometimes on the running track ... you should hear me, Jerry and Scott moan about having to run!) then its 30 mins exercises and another 10 mins warm down in terms of the type of exercises, the coach does a great job of varying every session so no 2 are ever the same and, as its a small group, the emphasis is very much on quality not quantity. he makes sure what youre doing is correct form so you gain most benefit from it. its done on a circuit basis (4/5 stations, 40 seconds on one exercise, then move onto the next) and, as it says on the tin, its all core related ... obviously it goes far beyond sit-ups and crunchies! google things like side planks, bosu ball exercises, swiss ball exercises (jack knives for ex.) and you'll get a feel for it. its hard but also, cos youre doing it with 4/5 Wheelers, a laugh as well. let me know if you need any more info, or just come along and try one ...

I thought I'd try to get to some of these too, but I've just read what's involved and now I'll be busy - very very busy - on Monday nights !!
Is there somewhere to lock a bike up / store a bike in the sports hall while we're core training?
Or a more pertinnet question - is it feasible to ride home after one of these sessions or would it be wiser to sit on the train quietly crying?

Dave - get yourself along to this...

I did a lot last summer but haven't really made it to many this year due to too much cycling (is there such a thing!?) However, great cross training.

jeez Ant, you'll be wanting to become a triathlete (ie a failed cyclist!) next!!
yeh, the track area is busy so locking bikes up is perfectly safe there ... think Viv did it all the time last year ... and I'm sure youd be able to ride home, just dont expect to be doing it at 25mph!

Yeah I know people who've done this particular MF training course in an efort to get fit - after 3 weeks they looked a damn site worse than when they'd started. Paggered is the word I'd use.
So thanks but er, no thanks

I always leave my locked to the railings beside the track and no problems so far. Looking forward to them starting again, good fun and jerk chicken stop on the way home

and i should add, if anyone has any major concerns about bike safety, theyd be welcome to leave them at my house which is all of about 200 yards from the gym!

Think the group maybe slightly larger this year mate, with several of us newbies wanting to try our hand at racing next year.

sounds like it, Tony. sounds great. I'll go in there and have a chat with Dan (the coach) beforehand ... i think he was happy to take a max. of 6 but if we found we were consistently getting more than that, they do have another room they can use there, I think. what I will say, from experience of this and other things, is that there are always reasons why folks cant make it. For example, the 2nd Monday of every month is a committee meeting so Viv, Jerry and Scott cant make that week and we struggled for numbers last year. I reckon if we get a group of 10 people who are interested, that'd be great and guarantee us 6 every week.

To all who expressed an interest, I note theres a fixture clash next Monday (3rd) with the monthly social taking place the same night.
from experience, there is always something clashing with anything you try and arrange - the following monday for example is committee meeting so 3 of our regulars are tied up with that.
my view is to push on and do the sessions until such time as we realise theyre not sustainable.
so, as long as I know theres a minimum of 4 for next Monday, I'll get Dan to put the session on.
If not, I'll postpone it and review it later in the month.
can u let me know if youre up for next monday? feel free to email direct ... iwhittell@aol.com
cheers
