I filled out a form to join the club before going on holiday but didn't get round to putting it in the post. Unfortunately whilst I was away I broke my hip falling off a bike in Italy. The fall was nothing spectacular - bike just slid from under me on some oil or something as I was turning a fairly slow corner but I guess I landed fairly heavily on my side and the hip took all the impact. It was fixed with screws when I got back to the UK and I'm up and about now with fingers crossed it heals OK.

I had 2 questions:

I'm 38 years old and wondered if there was anybody who'd had a similar injury at a similar age and if they are still riding / how long the recovery was? I'm aware already it's a long process.

Does anybody know any physiotherapists in Manchester that know about cycling? The hospital physio's interest doesn't go much beyond sitting, standing and climbing stairs.

Cheers
Tom

Tom,

Glad to hear your on the mend ,im 36 and did the identical crash and resultant injury at the end of February this year and was fitted with a dynamic hip screw . There is light at the end of the tunnel although it seems like your getting nowhere fast , i am now riding on the road after 5months post op and everything is fine ( obviously fitness has gone and alot of muscle wastage ) . If you drop me a PM with your mobile i can run you through my experience / exercise tips/ and physio recommendation.

Quinnie, thanks for your messages - I got them and PM'd you back a couple of times - sounds like you might not have got them? Let me know if you didn't so I can check out what's wrong.

It may be that as you're not a member yet the system does not allow you the facility to send PMs, in the similar way that you as a non-member can post only into the Enquiries section.
However try again to be sure.
If you can't do it, one of you will probably need to insert their tel no. into this thread so the other can ring him.
Quinnie is certainly the man to help you out - I had the same injury when I was a teenager and was in hospital for 15 weeks.
However that was back in 1960 and the NHS is not the same animal as it was then.
Cheers and good luck with your recovery.

Ken - That's probably what it was. I did join but wasn't a member when I initially posted this message and probably not when I first tried sending PM's. Recovery seems to be going well. I recently got rid of the crutches which is great. Not allowed on the road yet until the bones are fully back to strength but hope to be early in the new year - just in time for the snow and ice!

Quinnie - I'll try sending a PM again, if it doesn't work, my contact details are goldthorpe.tom@gmail.com or 07514 273656
