Hope it works better than when I used Google maps on my HTC the other week, 2 miles of riding my shiny new TT bike down an unmade potholed gravel farm road signed "Private Road"near Risley. The bouncing around was sufficient for me to break the carbon clamp on my setpost The only slight consolation was I did only have my Neutron wheels on and not my race wheels

This does not replace a Garmin GPS device at all..........
If you can afford a Garmin, they are well worth it. If not, then oh well. edited by Hub.Willhub on 16/08/2010

That was a party election broadcast from the Conservative Party.

It well does when you have a perfectly good Polar HRM. I'm not interested in shelling out superflous cash on another device to perform a function that i can get for free... I have a stash of OS maps that i use if i want to look things up and check altitudes etc, as a great man once said ' I don't need no map - i just follow my dick '
And whilst your commenting on my means of affording a Garmin, i'd like to remind you that it's MY taxes that have paid for your education and allowed you to pay for yours with your grant / pocket money ( and your microwaved mars bars )
The day bike riding became all about numbers still breaks my heart. Its all about the marketing, pandering to folk by designing features that are 'Must haves' .Powertaps go hand in hand with this! I seem to leavng a couple of former GB rowers with Powertaps for dead on the Orient in Mallorca as they marvelled at an LCD Screens.and 'output figures'. Watt Watt Watt was the shout as we scooted past them.... Unless you have the nouse to use a device like that and are at the top of your game then IMHO they are worthless.
Not having worked for a GPS manufacturer i would imagine that the production cost of a device is negligiable and that the reason for the frankly inflated price is to cover their comms cost on the GPS sattelite. If a mobile phone can perform the same function give or take a few animations then it opens up that sort of tracking to the masses at a much lower cost - something that i'm firmly behind and can only lead to more innovation if a weight of users gets behind something like this.
The 1st test of this failed - after a 1/4 of my commute due to a server failure but i'll stick with it in the hope that its useful to me and to others of a more frugal nature, but to be honest i knew i was flagging into a relentless cross wind and i don't need any device to tell me that!

Thats one for my new book "100 great excuses for being 4 hours late home from a clubrun". A surefire best seller.
A powertap could have confirmed what your head was telling you. edited by martinh on 17/08/2010

I say it failed in that it recorded the data for the 1st 13 miles, after that it became but a pretty stopwatch. Their site is still down today so cannot make a fair assesment.
Can I have a signed copy Dad ?

No problem, I've just got 99 more to discover, wheres Ed when you need him.
In case anyone would be interested in my other unfinished thrillers, there's also "100 ways to do a u turn at the start of a 25", 99 more required on that one as well. I may expand this one to include all distances.

I tend to do them far enough away from the start that I can't have a chat with the starter whilst I'm doing it..... edited by NickW on 17/08/2010

i think '100 ways for a time keeper to gain importance' would be a better seller- assuming it doesn't cause scenes similar to those caused by the satanic verses with riders burning skin suits along the A50.

Ok quick update on this ere experiment. The site had a major failure ( 1st of its ilk from what i've read ) and halfway through my live upload their service went down. Normally it can operate independently without the live transmission to record a route on your device for a later upload.
Endomondo appears to use a generic GPS / Google maps hack similar to the Garmin player that most have seen. Bar recording HR and power this tracks average speed, position and altitude in the same manner and for no more outlay than the data transmission costs. Early days yet and far from a comparison but it is available for all the major mobile platforms and seems to have a good userbase behind it.
Also has some neat features similar to those that Apple have attempted to patent for their new bike computer. Other neat thing is that in live upload mode you can transmit your whereabouts in real time - useful for say loved ones or for helpers keeping tabs on progress in say a long TT.
if you get a chance try downloading it and let us know what you think.

Have used the similar 'sportypal' for a while with some success.
But then I got a Garmin, as it goes well with my PowerTap.
Sorry.

I gave this a go yesterday and was pretty impressed with how the whole thing links together - create an account on the website, download the app to the phone, sign in to that with the same account, and any journeys you record with the phone are there to be viewed in more detail on the web.
I know it's not what the thing is designed for, but having no chance of getting on the bike yesterday I set it to record a 'workout' while I was in the car (excellent way to claim some extra training miles - though no-one's ever going to believe I did 40mph up Oswaldtwistle Moor).
The downside for me was that in a bit more than 2 hours it used nearly 50% of the battery. This is probably down to the iPhone battery rather than the app itself.
What this doesn't seem to do is the thing I'd want most from a garmin - the sat nav bit, to be able to plan a route in advance then be guided round it - pity, but what do you expect for free?
cheers for finding it

Being a White van man (hopefully a reasonably responsible one who always looks out for cyclists) I thought it was about time I surrendered to the constant march of technology amd bought myself a sat-nav device. I also bought a bluetooth headset as well. Working in the motor trade I got one a Route 66 sat-nav, which with my staff discount cost me only £47. I have had reasonable results with it, but I would comment that sometimes it's ideal if you know where you are and how to get to your destination. Other times it delivers me exactly to the door. Also there does not seem to be any way to increase the volume either on the device itself or on the computer. Any tips anyone ????
