Now that the nights are drawing in again (!) we're looking ahead to the autumn and winter seasons.

We're planning to hold a social/meeting to discuss the forthcoming track and cyclocross seasons at 7pm on Monday 9th August at the Lass O'Gowrie pub in Manchester: www.thelass.co.uk.

The meeting will be informal and the topics discussed can be wider than those outlined above. It's an opportunity to get together, drink beer, and make plans for the forthcoming season and for new members, or those who are new to racing of any discipline, to come and chat to some of the more experienced members.

Post below if you have any topics you'd like us to cover.

So there's some interest in Track racing then Becks ?

I've been considering selling my track bike and focusing on other racing disciplines, but if there are some others looking at track racing, I might consider having another go...

I will be away for this (LEJOG), but i would have been very keen to come along.

I wanted to find out about cyclocross mainly - is there a page on the wheelers with information on it? is there any training sessions? (big decisions, including buying a bike!!).

Also...during the winter will there be a regular club run at the weekend? - (i rode before with rutland of sheffield) and they do the same 50miles with cafe stop every weekend in the winter, it seemed to me a good way to get new people and regulars out all the time and made the club very active.

Thanks, Chris.

Hi Chris. Its handily stored on the website under 'About Cycling | Cyclo Cross' : http://www.manchesterwheelers.co.uk/cycling/cyclo-cross.htm

Will update with any info on sessions etc that come out of the meeting.

Hi Chris, yes there will be at least one regular ride over the winter (iirc last winter we ran a shorter run (30-40 miles) and a longer run (55-80 miles) where possible). What we don't tend to do is do the same route week in week out (exception being winter chain gangs). Variety is the spice of life and the route of a club run is at the descretion of the person volunteering to lead it. A route is occasionally subject to change on the day if it's cold/wet etc i.e if the weather is bad a hilly ride in the Peaks may be re-routed into the more mediterranean climate of the Chesire plain . However, even if the route changes, start point and time will remain the same.

Hi Chris,

This is one club that doesn't go into hibernation during winter - it's busier than ever with 'cross and track racing and plenty of club runs...

I wouldn't say there's an overall scheme of cyclocross training. As most 'cross races are only an hour long, shorter harder road training rides will help, but these aren't the sort of club runs we do during winter. It's tricky - as some riders are winding down to get the winter road miles in, others are sharpening up for 'cross and track racing. So people often have to do their own thing.

Mick Style often does some skills specific 'cross training rides which are great.

There are enough nearby 'cross races to last you through the season, so unless you can train mid-week, you may find that a race each Sunday is all you can fit in - which is a position a lot of us find ourselves in during Winter, especially when it's cold dark and rainy outside. That goes with a lot of racing of course - the best training is often doing the race itself, although you need to do more than one hard effort per week to actually get better (otherwise you soon reach a fitness plateau)

You could also hook up with 'H' (you may already have done so). He can sort you out with a mid-week evening training routine using his CompuTrainer machines.

You'll get plenty of good advice here on buying a 'cross bike too.

Chris, just to add to Ben's comments, we'll be organising some specific cross training sessions focussing on technique starting mid-August and we'll post details up here as well as discuss at the Lass. I'll also put all the races on our Events list when I've got a tick.

Post on here or Pm me if you need any more specific advice in the meantime.

thanks for your replies!
all good news, i would be more than happy to lead some of the winter rides.

as far as cyclocross goes, it really appeals to me but if i am to do it i will need to sell a bike to buy a cross bike. ill keep looking into it. (is it possible to use a cross bike - with smaller front chain rings as a winter bike/tourer? that way i could get rid of two bikes (girlfriend very happy)).

Absolutely fine - loads of people use cross bikes as their training bike and for commuting to work.

You could consider fitting mudguards on it for club runs and then removing them for cross rides.

But don't worry about gears, the highest gear on a cross bike is plenty to keep up with club runs.

If you were forced to own just one bike, a cross bike would probably be the ultimate choice - many of us would agree with that...although, Scott B would probably argue that you only need a Cervelo P4

Works for big Si C. He uses that jake cross bike for everything - club runs, off road, road races, TTs. Bargain.

Welcome to my world Scott - we can be part of the 'non-mud guard' club together!
