Guys, just a reminder to anyone considering entering the 3 Peaks cyclo cross on Sunday 26th September, the entry goes up on the site on Thursday 1st July - http://www.3peakscyclocross.org.uk/entryform.htm
It'll probably sell out on the day so be quick, and remember you can only ride on a cross bike for this very special and tough event.
Hopefully there'll be a few of us on the start line this year.

Sent my entry off this morning. Wonder whether Mick will be lapping me twice as per normal in the NW races!

Now it is less than 10 weeks to go and I know I’m crap at hills so I’m planning on doing some hill specific training which others may want to join. If there are enough interested in joining, including those following the hill climbing thread, I’ll start posting some regular hilly rides each week and open up some related threads if there is a positive response to this post .
Apart from my other rides my plan is this: 1) I will do a weekly hilly ride of just over two hours on Wed night starting at the Gateway at 6:15. These rides will all head up to the Brickworks area. I know it's late notice but I’ll start tonight. 2) On Saturday mornings 9am, again going past the Gateway, I will go out to do some hill intervals most likely on Swiss Hill or the Wizard. These will be about 3-6 minutes long and about 4-6 reps. 3) On every other Sunday I will do a 50-60 mile very hilly ride.
I never done cyclo-cross before or know the best places to go to practice, so I’d be keen to join any others that may want to do similar. edited by Paul on 21/07/2010

Nice one Paul - I like the attitude !
That sounds like perfect training for any type of bike racing. If I had the time I'd be joining you.
What makes you think you're not good on hills then ?
RE: the Three Peaks - I think jogging up steep hillsides with a rucksack full of spuds is probably the best training I can do !!

Paul, go for 35mm only - no smaller to cope with the rocky descents and drainage channels, pumped up to the max to avoid rim pinches. I use Schwalbe Racing Ralphs and highly recommend them.
In terms of training, the hill ints you're doing sound like good conditioning and will help on Pen-y-Ghent track climb, and will help build your legs for the steep walk-ups each peak...but won't prepare for you for the agonising stretch in your calves going up Simon Fell!!! You'd need to do a fair bit of walking up long steep climbs for that, but don't worry too much, I keep promising to do specific training and never end up doing it!
We're planning to run some specific cross training sessions (probably not 3 peaks specific) but should help with cross techniques in a few weeks so watch this space!

Mick, I remember reading that the organisers measure the width of tyres (presumably with calipers).
Some tyres are slightly wider than other brands (of the same size). Do you know if a tyre that has '35mm' stamped on the side wall will always be accepted ?
I was going to ask this on the ThreePeaks forum but for some reason I can't view the forum topics despite being logged in.

RE: training - I'm leading a semi-offroad ride this Saturday if anyone wants to blow the dust of their 'cross bikes. It's possibly a bit early for Three Peaks training, but It'll be useful preparation for Sleepless in the Saddle. I know Paul is interested in coming along - not sure about anyone else yet. I'll put some more details up about it in the 'rides' section.

Here's a link with info about the ride:

Ben, not heard that about tyres. So if they're 35mm, that's cool.

Cheers Mick, sounds good.
Paul tried out his new 35mm Schwalbes on Saturday - they were great.
I think the new UCI rules allow 35mm tyres so they're probably the ones to go for.

In recently published changes to the international cyclo-cross regulations, the UCI has indicated that the maximum tyre width allowable for cyclo-cross is reduced from 35 mm to 33 mm with effect from 1st July 2010.
There are no such restrictions in place for domestic competition, and this will not affect the vast majority of domestic races. However the change is intended to apply to those races which appear on the UCI calendar, i.e. Senior Men's National Trophies and the Senior Men, Senior Women, Under-23 Men and Junior Men categories at the National Championships.
