It would be fantastic to get some Wheelers teams into some hill climb competitions this year. We have some really talented climbers in the club now and team prizes are based on the top 3 from each club so if we get a bit organised i think we could do well. John Brown, John Crellin, Chris Lockyer, Will Hub all spring to mind but im sure theres plenty more good climbers around (just a shame Si B is second claim eh). John Brown is also keen to get a team together for the national hill climb which would be fantastic.
They don't start for a while yet but in the past we have often missed out so this is the plan...
- post up here or send an email to info@manchesterwheelers.co.uk if you think you might be interested - can someone volunteer to list the main local hill climbs with dates and any other info they can find - add to the rides list / post up here
We can then try and work out which events to target as a team etc

Good call Viv. I was speaking to Jonathan Poole about this at the weekend - he's keen on helping organise a team for the nationals and other events.
I also spoke to Will (hub) on Sunday to encourage him a bit (he doesn't like the idea yet !)
Maybe this year we'll get more than 2 riders doing the rake ! (we should have won the team prize in '08). If John Brown is returning to defend his Mow Cop title, we should definately go one better and get the team prize, or even a 1,2,3 !!
I'm hoping to get in some sort of shape for the HC season and help us towards some team prizes, so count me in. I'll add some of the events I think are best for the club (e.g. Mow Cop, Snake, Rake, Cat etc...)
But anyone who saw me getting dropped on the road up to Pexhill on Sunday will be wondering why I'm even talking about hill climbs !

I wouldn't get downhearted Ben; I watched Matt Goss (HTC Columbia) being blown out of the back of the Smithfield Nocturne Elite Crit on saturday so it happens to the best
If I have any money I will be entering some hill climbs this season. I wouldn't count on it though.

Cheers Ben, good to hear from you. If you can get a list of events together and Jonathon Poole can co-ordinate entries that sounds like a plan.
If anyone is up for doing the nationals please let John Brown know.

Big thanks for doing these Jonathan. We' should get them on the events list if they're not there already so people can put their names down and we can see where we have got enough for a team. Great stuff.

Some extra 'early season' hill climb dates for those of you who want to start the suffering earlier! Both run by Macc Wheelers as part of their club TT series:
Wed 11th Aug: Pym's Chair J 9/6 - Start 7pm by Jenkin's Chapel, Saltersford, Goyt Valley - Grid Ref 984767 - short - but brutal climb - especially when there's a head wind!
Wed 18th Aug: Cat & Fiddle J 9/7 - Start 7pm.
Good luck! x

Calling John Brown, John Crellin, Miles, Ben, Will Hub Esq, plus any other mountain goats I've not mentioned, time to get your heads together and get some teams prizes. If anyone needs organisers addresses give me a shout. Entries for the Snake close today so get planning pronto.

Not sure I count as a mountain goat really and not so sure I'll be any use to man nor beast in trying to get a team prize but will be up for doing the rake maybe, not sure about any others particularly but if others are doing share the knowledge and I may be persuaded.

I did the snake on sunday - good times. massive headwind (James Dobbin could only get within three mins of his record and still won).
Im really keen to do some more, i am entered into the beeley moor climb in october. anyone know any which are the long drag type rather than short steep power sprints?? what is the rake like?
cheers, chris.

The rake is steep - theres a handrail up the side! We had a good turn out last year from the wheelers and its great for spectators. Tends to be won in under 3 minutes so doesn't sound what you're after but it is a classic.
Im wondering whether to do one of the longer ones. Anyone able to put some info onto the list like Mick did for the cross races? Think most the ones on this list are short steep ones.

As far as I know, the following are 'long drags' as opposed to short steep climbs:
12/9/10: Buxton CC - Long Hill 19/9/10: ABC Centrville - Blackstone Edge 17/10/10: Weaver Valley CC - The Cat
You can sort of tell by the length - anything 2 miles or more won't be all that steep, as the most elevation you ever get on a HC is about 200mtrs (I think the Snake is the most you get, at 270mtrs).
The longest continual drag of any climb in the UK, which is also used for a HC TT every year is Cragg Vale, near Sowerby Bridge. I'm not sure when this event this is though. It's most likely end of this month. It's a big-ring drag for about 4 miles !

am back from the south now - keen to get involved with the vertical stuff but may need to get some under my belt before commiting to an event - there aint no hills in london town! slogging it from one end of the isle of man to the other on the MTBike in the E2E will help this weekend.
can do the 19/09 and 17/10 if anyone else has entered?
ta.
