B66 DEE...guy got fed up waiting in the queue and suddenly turned left into me. Apparently he indicated but i was riding pretty cautiously and didn't see him. EIther way he definitely missed the 'mirror' step. Just cuts and bruises this time but i'm so fed up of this. I'm not going to give up and drive anywhere but it feels like theres nothing we can do.

How about a headcam? You can get some pretty cheap these days and at least you can then present something to the rozzers without having to rely on people as witnesses.

Hope your okay viv. Commuting is nightmare always feel its a case of "when" you have your next incident, not "if".
Got the train to picadilly and rode the to mile work in jeans a couple of times this week - seem to get even less respect on the road as a casual commuter than when wearing lycra! Wish I had a quieter commute its mentally draining some days.

Yeah cheers im fine, just minor cuts, bruises and a bit stiff.

My commute is normally ok and i ride really cautiously aware of every junction but ones like this you just cant predict. We just have to hope when we have incidents they're lucky escapes not the alternative. The only think i can think of is making everyone ride a bike before they get a driving licence - not practical in reality but its the only thing i can think might work.

Viv - glad to hear you're OK. If you haven't, I suggest you report it to the police. Note that the driver is obliged to report any acident resulting in injury. It won't go anywhere (unless you have witnesses), but it's important that these things are recorded.

I have to say that, now that my commute has changed in direction, distance and type (more sub-urban and rural), there are different challenges (idiots on country lanes). There isn't much filtering these days (used to have to do lots when riding into town), but I still maintain the maxim that I never ride up the inside of lorries and buses ever, and never ride alongside vehicles next to a junction. Slows progress a little, but some of the kamikaze riding I've seen in Manchester makes me wonder how people get to their destinations safely.

Heal fast and get back on the bike tonight for the ride home.

That cyclist really didn't do himself any favours by smacking the side of the van at 19secs....

I've smacked cars and vans. Anyone getting that close deserves a warning. Panel vans make the best sound.

Where I didn't agree was his willingness to accept the invitation to ride up the inside of the van. Through experience, I know you just hang back at that point, however much the red mist has descended.

Agree with Tom that incidents like that if you've actually been hit should be reported. Goes for anything, I've had friends not bother reporting broken car windows etc. which really annoys me.

I actually 'tapped' the back window of a car for the first time on Monday that pulled from the opposite direction right across me to park. I've not watch the video but agree it's generally not a clever thing. A few months back, there was a long discussion on my works Bike User Group forum, as to the best gloves someone should get to protect their knuckles for hitting vans that came too close...

In the old days so i'm told , a liberally placed fingernail in the valve of the offenders tyre used to provide quick and easy justice to offending motorists. Other more severe cases pulling keys from the offenders ignition and tosisng them in the street / field sufficed. Not that i'd encourage such behaviour, but i'm sure a comedy writer might make something decent of them of them...

btw the boot can be on the other foot - have a read of this as posted on another forum today ....

I reported it. At least his reg is in a system somewhere. I like to think when new incidents are reported they check the reg to see if they've been involved in one before and maybe get a warning if they have but i know thats make believe.

Its definitely complicated and are reckless cyclists aswell as careless drivers but in this case i really feel i took every reasonable step to avoid incident. Anyone that knows me will say im probably too cautious when it comes to commuting, i ride fairly slowly and watch out for cars that might be turning at each junction. I really dont think i could have anticipated this one. Just one of those things and luckily im fine.

Be careful everyone.

Theres no point trying to get a straight article in the press to educate drivers but just wondered if we came up with some kind of stunt or angle it might be worth it?

Its not worth dwelling on stuff like this, just wondering if we could do something to raise awareness. The number of people i hear of being knocked off is crazy and when it happens to you you feel helpless.

As someone just said to me, maybe i shouldn't waste my energy, it wont make any difference. Still if you have a gem of an idea for something we could do let me know. Anything with an enduring image that might stick in peoples minds could be worth a shot.

Viv,

If you can get some numbers of cyclists admitted to A&E after RTA’s in Greater Manchester in a year then try to get the same number of cyclists to ‘flash mob’ in central Manchester with a bit of media pre notification it may get some support. You could get the riders to don some theatrical blood and guts make-up to highlight the injuries sustained.

One of the guys who rides TLI’s runs Road Peace. Why don't you pop your Road Race cherry at a TLI and have a chat with him?

Another sensible suggestion - The MP for Chorlton / Withington, John Leech is right behind cyclists rights, and might well be interested in a supporting something peaceful since the notorious Wilmslow Road goes straight through his 'manor'

I meant to post this up too. http://citybeast.com/cyclingsafetypage.html

It's a map of various cyclist accidents (serious and fatal). Have a look to see how your route fares.

WARNING: this was posted on Singltreack the other day (they've had a spate of comuting related threads lately*). Somone suggested there may be a trojan or virus with it, so open with care.

6 serious along my route to college, and to think I don't wear a helmet to college.

11 serious along my ride to the gateway.

Look at em all down oxford road lol, glad I don't use that crap road anymore, I'm surprised there ain't like so many down the curry mile you can't even see anything on the map there.
