I'm just thinking about what food I should be taking on the bike?

What are everyone's thought on Mars Bars? Do they offer a good amount of energy? Do they actually slow you down due to the fat content?

I was thinking of buying the ingredients for flapjack and trying that, is anyone a regular user of flapjack? How much would you use for say a 70 mile hilly ride (without cafe stop), and is it cost effective compared to buying it from the shop or buying some cereal bars from Tesco.

Thanks
Will.

I think you should avoid anything with either high fat like meusli bars or chocolate and/or with simple sugars like sucrose. Go for foods with long chain CHOs. My rule is one banana per two hours, bananas have long chain carbohydrates so have a slow uptake and avoids the sugar rush, high in potasssium, easy to swallow, biodegradeable packaging blah blah. I have recently taken to Kellogs Nutrigrain Elevenses Raisin Bakes. They are about 4 quid for a pack of 12 at Tesco and come packaged in good bite sized chunks so you can easily take 4-5 in your back pockets. I'm sure that there is probably a simple recipe to copy them. I take a mix of things to avoid boredom. Drinking is is just as important so I take 50% watered down fruit juices again to aovid high simple sugar content drinks and becuase I can't be arsed paying for epxensive sports drinks although if it gets really hot for long race/ride I would seriously think about a sportsdrink provided I had tried it before. The rule is 750 ml per hour although more if > 20C. Again you could probably make up your own recipe but beware I once tried to make sports drink using long chain CHOs and salts but it gave me the ****s I think because it was fructose based.

I've been a pretty heavy user of flapjack (or the jack as us heavy abusers call it) for a couple of years now. It's not something I'm proud of but I need to get it out in the open.

It first started on a club run when someone (known as a pusher), maybe Nick, offered me a wee bit to try for free. He said that all the fast guys in Cheshire were on 'jack and it's what needed to be done to keep up. I thought one tiny little square wouldn't hurt and it did feel so good with all its oaty sugary goodness, a real hit like no other. I thought I could handle it but soon I realised I needed more. I went back to my pusher and at first he helped but then suddenly the price went up. He even tried to make me do things for jack, like extra turns on the front or lend him a spare inner tube before he'd give me another hit.

It affects people differently, some can handle it and take it in the car parks at village halls before races up and down the country [I've seen people in this club do that, but I'm not here to name names]. But look under the bridges out on the Cheshire Cycleway some Saturday afternoon and you see some desperate characters in the shadows stuffing their faces and begging you for a hit as you go past.

Now sometimes I get so desperate for flapjack I'll even sink to those Fabulous Bakin' Boys ones - two packs for £1.50 from Tesco.

People even take flapjack recreationally these days. Quite often on a Friday at work people will bring them in (and some mini muffins), they don't realise how serious this stuff is.

Don't mess around with this Will and be careful if you make it yourself. You could loose your college place, your family, your self respect, your teflon non stick coating in your pan, it just ain't worth it...

Don't listen to Miles. He doesn't know what he's talking about. I've been a user for a long time and it's never done me any harm. You can take it in many forms but personally I prefer my home grown version because you know what's in it. I'll dig out my formula for a perfect flapjack if you want. It's top quality.

I'll try some of this stuff, I'm spoilt for choice, next time I'm out, I'll get my Garmin to beep every 15mins and I'll have a mouthful of flapjack or something, I'm sure if I keep doing that perhaps I'll never have energy problems and be able to keep an easy fast pace all day.

It's because he's Scotch, and it's only possible to understand one word in four or five.

See Jay knows where it's at. Electrolite Replacement PorridgeTM. What more do you want. Oats, salt, box it up, stick a picture of an Allez on the front of it and I'll make a killing on the start line of the Cheshire Cat!

Ed FYI you are allowed a wee bit of milk for dipping.

I'm just finishing off something in work, but am absolutely starving.

Any chance someone could pop round with some jack? You know, to aid concentration and that.
