Hello all,
For all those whove ridden this road, which is the best way to do it? East to West or West to East? Planning on doing it on Sunday, setting off from Glossop, up round snake pass. (all welcome btw, not just fishing for info)
Cheers,
Hx

Im guessing from looking at bikehike and the profile that east to west is best in terms of gut churning steepness, which is what we all want (isnt it...?). Can anybody confirm?

Thanks nick!
The road is names Winnats Pass on bikehike, so hopefully this is the right one and we wont end up on some dreary bypass after riding all the way to get to it! it reaches 22% in parts, if i've mapped it right...

Its pretty obvious when you get there. If you miss the left turn then you end up going up the broken road around Mam Tor. You'll know this when the tarmac runs out...

Er, hardly. I seem to remember there is pictoral evidence of you competing on the Rake...!

I'd have prob joined you, but for the fact that it's *whispers* Valentines Day and I'm under the thumb, er, I mean I'm having a recovery day....

What time are you leaving Glossop? I was planning somthing similar but was going to leave Didsbury at around 8am so could meet up around 9 or 9:30 somewhere in Glossop

We hadnt planned a time yet. Can i get back to you once i have consulted with my significant other? Provisionally 9:30 sounds good. Gives us a chance to get breakfasted and out the door. We're being wimps and driving to Glossop. :/
Tom, your comments are kind, but a time of 5:11 hardly constitutes competing, merely taking part

As you've done the rake you'll get up winnats. I think mam nick is tougher as it drags on abit, at least winnats is over fairly quickly!

Helen - only one way to go at it .... Avvit

Btw the really steep bit is just round the corner....

The bit you can see is probably about 1 in 6

IMHO Winnats is harder than anything round here as there's usually a headwind going up. The Rake isn't that hard in comparison, and only gaines 90 metres. I think the only UK climb that I've suffered more on was Wrynose Pass from the East (200 mtrs in 1km).
