Does anyone have any experience of fitting a child seat to a bike with disc brakes ?
I visited bike doctor the other day, who are quite experienced in urban/commuting cycling and said they don't know of any dedicated setup - although it's possible to bend the rack in some cases.
The problem lies in attaching the LHS strut to the drop-out. The brake caliper sticks out too much, especially with mechanical (cable) brakes like mine.

Ben - does it mount like a pannier rack, and if so do you think that similar mountings would be the way to go?
Great that you're taking the little man out on the bike - start 'em young and all that..!

Yes Tom, it does.
I should have mentioned that it's the Co-Pilot Taxi I want to get, and it only fits a certain model of Blackburn pannier rack (which comes included when you buy the seat).
Blackburn don't appear to sell a rack for disc-brake bikes.
Overall, I'm not all that keen on taking little Aurélien out on the roads. For now, I'm just going to be taking him to nursery (only 3 weeks to go !) on my way to work. I've worked out a nice back street / park route that avoids the nasties, although it does require crossing the A56 at Dane Road / Glebelands Road.
It seems ironic that one of the plus points advertised for my bike was "full rack mounting points front and back". I guess Marin assumed someone out there would make a rack that fits.
I think Hamax make a child seat that clamps to the seat tube, but I doesn't seem very stable to me. And I've got a gear cable running down that tube anyhow.

Ben - this (kind) of topic often comes up on the Singletrack forum. Might be worth doing a search there to see if anyone has any tips on mounting non-disc racks on bikes with disc frames.
Also, I wonder if the likes of SJS do any special mountings that might help you out.
I can understand why you don't want to go on the busy roads with him. Though I do tend to think that car drivers ought to use a bit more awareness, it seems that they can't always manage that. A few times I have seen a couple riding in the direction of the University with a small passenger in a seat and I slightly wince at the thought of the traffic, and that isn't even on Oxford road..!
When I think of great big boulevards like Princess Parkway, it does amaze me that no provision could be made for a decent, European style, bike lane. When I'm in charge, all of this will change.... edited by TomF on 08/02/2010
