Hi,
I did Sunday's 120-mile audax which became 135 miles, first long ride for 18 months. All is well with my body, no aches or pains etc, except for my right achilles which burns. I've just been ou for my first ride of the week, I lasted 4 mins before turning back, such was the intensity of the pain.
I blame my inactivity and possibly the cross bike I used which isn't quite set up how I like it, different geometry etc. So I'll be using a road bike for future events. But has anyone got any thoughts on how to treat it, apart from resting it? There's another audax on Sunday which I really want to do but equally I don't want to mess up yet another year.
Cheers, Andy

Andy,
Do not whatever you do do the audax on sunday!
I developed achilles tendonitis the year before last during a long cycle tour. An inability to stop riding there and then (I had to get home), a block headed refusal to acknowledge the injury, not stopping riding in the long term, and poor bike set up combined to make the problem last for 9 months. My ankle still gets sore sometimes even now.
Stop riding, see a physio. He/she will be able to give you stretching exercises and tell you whether or not you should ride during recovery.
I would also contact Si Bridge on here and get all of your bikes set up properly. In my case too high a saddle was overstretching my achilles everytime I rode and really aggravating it. Dropping my saddle cleared the problem in a matter of weeks.
Hope it gets better soon

Thanks Ed, I'm seeing a physio at 2:15 tomorrow. Hopefully by getting in there early it'll be sorted quickly - nobody has a more blockheaded refusal to acknowledge injury than me. edited by andyr on 27/01/2010

Thanks for the advice Ed. The physio said it was a good job I made the appointment straight away. Upshot no bike this weekend, stretching exercises, massage of affected calf next Wednesday, then back to it. Not gonna use cross bike for roadie stuff no more.

Glad to hear it.
Si Bridge has offered bike fitting advice to wheelers members on this forum before so I'm sure he wouldn't be against you PMing him for some advice. Even a minor difference between bikes can have a big effect on comfort etc and he really knows what he's talking about.
