hi there, just starting out in cycling and I am wanting to join a club, I was wondering about the intro bike ride, 7th feb 30 miler? Is it ok for me to just come along and meet at the gateway. hopefully the club run want be too fast!!! mainly been going to work each day and occasional ride to macc, cat&fiddle and back home down long hill. I am doing the 36 mile off road sportive end of january so will give me a better idea of what I can do. cheers Gordon.

Stonemonkey1972 - Come on down..

The intro rides are road rides intended to introduce riders to group riding, whether new or returning after a break from the sport.
On these the 'old hands' will be able to give you lots of tips from navigation to bike upkeep so they're a great place to start.

The main website has lots of info on the types of weekend rides on offer, routes, guidlines about kit & fitness levels & how to progress into racing etc. The club has riders of all ages and abilities so you should find you'll fit in somewhere. See here...

And Here...

http://www.manchesterwheelers.co.uk/rides/winter-guidelines.htm

You don't have to join to go on an intro & you won't get left behind either should you start to struggle for whatever reason - fitness, flat tyres, breakdowns, etc.

You mention a 36mile off road sportive - we've got lots of mudpluggers and cyclocross riders in the club too, so if your passion is for knobbly tyres we can probably satisfy that too. Most of us are road riders & many do both.

If you can manage the Cat & long hill you should be ok for the intro as these are mostly flat into cheshire. If you want to have a stab at something before Feb we're doin a midweek evening ride - see the Wedensday Knights thread on here. (Click Recently updated topics, its in there).
About 30miles this week. There'll be some fast lads doin that but its not going to be a race, so maybe give it a go.

Hope this helps. P.

Ooh, it varies (depending on the weather most probably) ... I think about 15 were out on the last one?

You're very welcome to come along no matter how many people are out riding though!

Hi Chris,

The Gateway is very easy to find, it's opposite Pars Wood High School, Cinema, Bowling, Bingo etc etc...

Those mudguards will be absolutely fine.

Enjoy the ride

just to say cheers ben, pete and other manchester wheeler lads who gave up their time today for the intro club run, enjoyed the ride even though i forgotten my gloves!! only had fingerless gloves on !! lol. The route was ideal and the pace was ok, even had a brew at tatton park. One of the club lads on the ride had 2 punctures and knackered someones pump!!! def not lend him a pump Cool Will do one more intro and then a club run and join!! Will go out this wed on the wed knight crew run!!! see how well i can do before getting dropped!! but hey where would the challenge be if something was easy!!! again many thanks to the lads.

We'll see you there, as long as the weather is good. Keep an eye on the rides list for the route.

Cheers, P.

Hi, I'm hoping to come along on the Intro ride this Sunday. I just thought I'd check it was still on.
I do expect to have a hangover after the England game though.

My Gums are healing, but not quickly enough to allow me to push it with the fast lads on Sunday, so I'm going to join in the intro ride instead. Steady 35miles & no real hills should be ok.
See you there, P.

Is "Gums" some sort of hubism and is actually something else completely?

No, its def Gums, not 'Plums' or any other bodybits.

I had a tooth out recently & I now have a tender hole in my mouth. Oh-er missus!
I'm choosing the intro ride as the distance suits better than the Hilton jaunt.

I think Cav would be better! Dental work caused a late start to his racing season too..
