I've just fitted one of these to the rear and it is scary at just how bright it actually is, I've also got a Cateye LD600 that I have set on constant.

Up front I use a Cateye EL530 on constant and a flashing Smart. Plenty bright, although saying that I still get idiots pulling out on me....

I've used the Cateyes for 2years in all weathers and they still work fine.

TomF can give you a link to a 900 lumen rechargeable light for £50ish from Deal Extreme - my lights from Planet-X (£140) use the same LED emitter - great on flashing mode as I am now managing to turn the tables and dazzle car drivers, and bright enough on full power to ride on unlit roads (or off road). Deal Extreme version is a much cheaper option though for basically the same light.

Nick/Tom, What’s your opinion/experience of these. I think I’ve found the link (http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.25149 ) and they look like a bargain!! Any issues with buying from the States? My mouse is hovering over the ‘buy’ button…………

Looking for something for night time lane bashing and in case I get roped into some bonkers 24hr MTB event again next year!!

I saw Mick and Si using the Exposure Joystick and I was so impressed I bought the whole company... No, actually I bought one as well. Scary bright but expensive (£150 from Wiggle).

Si - not bought one, but that's only inertia.

I could give you a thousand links to threads on the Singletrack forum on these, but suffice to say for the price people are very impressed. Indeed, there's one mad professor type on there (he builds the most amazingly bright lights using more up-to-date technology than the bike light manufacturers) who bought one to test and thoroughly rated it.

It seems that the trouble with LED technology is that there is a continuous arms race. What costs £300 one year, can be had for £100 the next, and so on.

Yes, that's the link for the DX light. It comes from Hong Kong, and I have heard varying tales about delivery times, with around 2 weeks being average. In fact, you've inspired me to get on and order one.

Is 900lumens like brighter than a car light? I've got a Fenix LD20, it was £47 which is pretty good, well I thought and it does 180lumen or around that on max but I run it at 90 and it seems to light up the road in the pitch black pretty good once I got the cables out of the way.

I can strongly recommend anything made by Exposure, but as stated earlier, they are expensive.

They were only making front lights, but the latest systems now feature an add-on tiny rear LED light that takes it's power from the charge port of the front light - so you only have to worry about charging one item.

One of the main advantages of Exposure light systems is that there are no battery packs or cables - they have some seriously compact Lithium Ion technology packed into the lights themselves, hence the price.

I bought my Enduro Maxx 2 years ago for 24hr racing, and have only used it for commuting !! but it's probably saved my life many times !!
