You know, even though Belgium doesn't seem to agree with me (chest infection from last November, throwing myself in the ditch this April), it was such good fun that I'm really tempted to do it again.
Next year was supposed to be one of not doing sportives - certainly not hilly ones - and my aim was Paris-Roubaix in June, but this could also find itslef on the list....
19,500 people rode it last year. If that isn't enough to tell people that the Belgians love cycling, then nothing is.
Oh, and the world's best beer and chips isn't such a bad draw, either....

I am pretty tempted to join you Andy. Me & TomF did the 140 kM this year and for some ridiculous reason I'm tempted to experience all the suffering of the full edition next year. That'd be great, the more the merrier. There are some stretches where full-blown depression sets in, so it'd be great to ride with a group.

Oh and there's a) a huge beer marquee and b) a frites and mayonnaise van at the finish Oh yes indeed.... I spilled mayo onto my front wheel because I was so fcked.

I'd LOVE to do this - and celebrate Nick's 52nd birthday with Beer and Chips !
Is it possible to do the whole thing in a weekend (including dirving there and back) without needing to book any extra days off work ?

Cheers for the info Nick. That doesn't sound too unreasonable, and I was forgetting that everyone stays to watch the real race on the Sunday (I think that's right isn't it?).
I'm just thinking that I won't get many chances to have a long weekend away from the family, so need to choose wisely ! But I can't think of something I'd rather be doing, or people I'd rather be with than you guys, riding up the Koppenburg !!

"The 94th Tour of Flanders will take place on Sunday 4th of April 2009. That's on Easter sunday." So the sportive will be on the day before.
The sportive's site is http://www.sport.be/cyclingtour/rondevanvlaanderen/2009/eng/ and will be updated to the 2010 version in the next few weeks. edited by andyr on 15/09/2009

I like the idea of going Thursday and coming back the following Tuesday.
I also have a good sized van so could take another 2 passengers with plenty of storage space for bikes.

Anita and I may have mentioned this in passing (the 140k route that is) .... I defo haven't been plied enough beer yet to say definitely yes though.
I'd probably be turning it into a bit of a family holiday (my Dad's half flemish) but would definitely be keen to meet up before/during/after.

You're telling me..! 140km was hard enough this year, though I had very little training under my belt, having been ill for so long after the trip to Gent a year ago this weekend (still so fresh in my mind!). This winter will, i hope be somewhat better, and so ought to allow me to drag myself tot he finish.
Actually, other than a couple of the more draggy climbs, the final 140km doesn't frighten me too much. It's adding 120km on top of that as a warm up which is more alarming..! edited by TomF on 27/11/2009

The first bit is flat flat flat and in a strange way is my favourite part - not because of its flatness but because it's so featureless. It's the real Flanders. The hills and the cobbles are great of course too.

Si - going to do 60 miles in Cheshire followed by another 90 miles taking in Swiss Hill avery 5 miles for the closest experience...
Andy - looking forward to hiding in a super group for this before we do battle with the Paterberg, Oude-Kwaremont, Koppenberg etc. Oh, and no compacts - got to big ring it all the way*....
So, are we going to have a big Wheelers group for this. Would be great to ride together.
*OK, this might be the pints I've just drunk speaking.

Hold on, Tijl. You rode it last year, coming from the Transalp previously. And you looked ruined. I may need to sleep for a week afterwards..!
Are you well? Riding much?
