I have been thinking about this for a few months now and when suggesting it to some riders, the general reply is very encouraging.
Here Goes; Does anyone fancy a Long ride with an overnight stop starting on a Saturday returning Sunday p.m. Im sure we could do 160 miles then find a cheapish B&B for food and a few drinks then do a similar route to return to the Gateway the next day.
I can plan the route, book the B&B if the interest is shown. Let me know your thoughts.

Had a B&B trip to Hawes in November which was good, only myself and NickW went in the end (as ended up being same weekend as Ghent which ruled out some of the usual suspects).
I'm going to "organise"/ go on one or a couple over winter, no time to fit in during summer at the moment though.
I'd advise just to pick a date and destination as when we initially tried to be democratic about it last year it just went round in circles. Dictatorship is the way to go!
160 miles back to back seems pretty ambitious, though possible during summer I guess. Make sure anyone that signs up knows what they are signing up to!

I rode to Nottingham and back in a day so to do 160 miles to a destination with an overnight stop then a similar distance on the return leg it shouldnt be a major issue.
I was thinking of the "Summer" months so you dont get weighed down with winter kit and the kitchen sink. Less is more.
Im planning to ride in one set of lycra which I will wash and leave to dry overnight. Tooth brush and tools/ inner tubes in saddle bag. Im pretty sure the B&B wont object too much to us eating in our cycling kit. I will make sure there is a shop so we can stock up on Flapjack and energy drinks.

First thoughts are;
Shrewsbury Whitchurch (South West direction from Stockport)
The Wash (South East)
Skegness (towards)
My favourite Stratford-upon-avon

Fantastic Viv.
Im thinking August may be a good month?
Without sounding like our resident Mile-aholic/ Average Speed/ Weight of bar tape/ Hill Percentage monkey. I have looked at the mileage from the Gateway to Stratford-upon-avon and it is 106 miles. If we average 15.142 mph then it would take us 7 hrs to get there. We will need to stop for Lunch and also take into account any bike issues that we may have.
We would expect to arrive late afternoon giving enough time to check in and then have a bike around stratford. edited by Nick T on 29/06/2009

How about somewhere like Llangollen , Bala or Lake Vywrny.. Same sort of distance ish ! Beautiful scenery and some really comical climbing - as soon you are past Alty its countryside all the way.

I was really disappointed that I didn't manage to do my ride to Abersoch as I've not explored Wales yet, so I'd be up for any trip to Wales. If we decide on Stratford I might be able to persuade Mrs G to drive a support vehicle as we have good friends that live there. It means that people can at least take a change of clothes.

Great, another "contestant"..... I mean Rider!
I think that we should try to arrange a get together will all the interested riders at some point and hopefully have a plan in place to discuss or sort out final plans.
A support car would be fantastic and a real help. Does that mean we can ride further? Will we be able to put spare wheels, frames and track pumps in the car? Will Mrs G hand out bottle on the ride and offer us words of support? Sorry I will stop now.
I think Abersoch is a good idea, also any part of Wales within a 100-120 mile route from the Gateway.

I MAY be interested, depends really, just no pc/tv at the flat = boring for 12+ hours and nothing on teh bed, everything came home with me. I'll see how my 180 mile ride goes sunday then I know if I'll be capable. I'll see if rocket fuel works.
I'm confused, the wash is 132 miles away. edited by Willhub on 30/06/2009

Will,
I listed "The Wash" down as a point to head towards, it doesnt have to be the final destination. Im just trying to Brainstorm some ideas and get a feel for how many people will be interested and also a destination.
Rocket Fuel? have you been experimenting again?

Nick,
I can recommend Betws-y-coed and Beddgelert in North Wales as well as Bala. All Leigh Prem B&B regulars over the winter. All will be around 100+miles each way depending on route. Lunch in Llangollen after the climb of the Horseshoe pass is welcome! All have good pubs for reasonably priced after ride food as well. The climb up Nant Gwynant from Beddgelert in the morning with a belly full of full English breakfast is always welcome…………
We’ve got loads of contacts for good B&B’s that welcome cyclists in all those places. Give me a shout if you need anything.
