Hi all, hope everyone is well. Apologies for not being seen on my bike much this year! Anyway, good news!

Manchester Wheelers' coaching sessions for youth riders are starting on Tuesday 9th June at Whalley Range School. We have been given a great opportunity to use the fantastic facilities they have at the school whilst keeping the sessions open for any young person who wishes to attend. Three coaches (Paul, Will & I) have completed the level 2 cycling qualification, with another member (Rachel) starting her course in June. We will be using the school's bikes and helmets for anyone who needs one, and we also have use of a large gymnasium with a number of static exercise bikes.

I know a lot of you have volunteered to help out, and we will certainly be able to make the sessions more productive with a few extra pairs of hands. If you are interested in doing so please reply or email me. My email address is on the flyer attached. Any comments and/or suggestions are also welcome.

Hope to see some of you on the 9th June. The session starts at 6pm and we have to be out at 8pm. There will be a session every Tuesday after this until 14th July.

Just wanted to say all the best to Phil, Paul and Will for their first youths coaching session tomorrow. It's brilliant for the club to see these up and running.

If you know any juniors that want to ride and you think they might be interested, tell them to go along or get in touch with Phil. Further info on the juniors page:

We had three riders in attendance for the first youth coaching session, which was more than enough for us to find our feet with coaching and get to know where things were in the school!

The kids that came along had a great time, and after a warm-up we taught them the basics of mounting and dismounting the bike, how to stop safely and which gear was appropriate in different situations. The whole session was based around fun games and we saw an improvement in all the riders by the end of the session.

Sessions will continue to run now every Tuesday evening from 6pm at Whalley Range High School until 14th July at least.

One thing I did notice was that any volunteers who can make it down to the sessions would be very useful. Even with 3 kids we were all kept busy and any help and support would be appriciated, particularly this Tuesday (16th) as I'll be in France.

After the exams finish at the school we will have the opportunity to use 4 Watt Bikes in their gym. These are very good pieces of kit which the club could make good use of if the demand is there. I know of other clubs who simulate track races on these bikes and we could even look at getting a league together. Watch this space...

We had a good session last night with six riders attending, including the three from last week coming back to have another go.
They were shown how to check their bikes for safety and some basic cornering techniques.
The last hour was spent with them racing and by the end of the session they had really come on and were using sprint tactics against each other.
A big thanks to Go-Ride coach Tom Hodgkinson for his help in delivering the session last night. The kids seemed to really enjoy it and wanted to carry on even after the two hours were up.

Well done Will, sounds like you're making excellent progress. Keep up the good work (and decent weather again too!)
