Will,

In my experience scrotes will steal any bike that isn't tied down and, if thwarted, will vandalise anything that is. If you really want to ride into uni I would suggest taping over the graphics with black electrical tape and fitting some mudguards and a rack. Buy a decent lock but ensure that the bike is not left unattended after dark.

How are you for insurance? As a student your parents house insurance may still cover your bikes away from home (my parents insurance did anyway). However, the policy may be very specific about the type of lock used and what you lock it to. My current insurance for example demands a sold secure gold rated lock and the bike must be securely locked to an immovable object (i.e. not just chained to itself).

I was going to go with Cyclesure, insuring my bike for 450 quid would be about 40 quid a year, and the lock I was going to buy was either:

Or

But unsure which is actually better. What I did last year is removed the graphics from my Aksium wheels as they are what is on the commuter. I've got some banged up old Open Pros but I fear the rear rim is gonna crack so can't use em.

I think this is somewhere for a bike:

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&q=uni&ie=UTF8&t=h&sll=53.483609,-2.270962&sspn=0.005005,0.013937&split=1&rq=1&ev=zi&radius=0.34&hq=uni&hnear=&z=17&layer=c&cbll=53.48409,-2.27122&panoid=a2b2w-36t7nZhcH6Hns0ZQ&cbp=12,0.91,,2,2.35

Would thieves really take a shine to this:

I thought thieves don't go for crap bikes, and I can always chuck a tin of paint over it.

For the price of a decent enough lock you could go to a second hand bike shop/ ebay and buy yourself a really banged up hack bike and use that to go to uni on instead then use a half decent lock like the one you are suggesting perhaps. Theres no way id leave a bike i cared about keeping in the middle of salford.
When im feeling super paranoid i use my D lock and coil lock together; im told thieves arent usually equipped to deal with both, unless im being very naive.

wherever you put it make sure you have a decent lock, they'll nick anything round there.
