Hi!

Hi everyone Im Adam,
Im looking for a group of people to go road biking with, so the rides the club offer are ideal. I want to start road biking 1) to get fit 2) get out of the house!!!!! I'm pretty sporty/competitive so if I reach a level of fitness or capability I would love to enter some races, but that is in the distant future. In the VERY DISTANT future I want to ride a stage of the TDF. As a huge TDF fan since childhood this would be a life goal.
I'm currently a student (studying for the law conversion, post graduate) so funds are severely limited. You may have to treat me like a baby and help me through my silly questions as I am completely new to this. I've had one afternoon at the velodrome about 5 years back and since then haven't really cycled on a proper bike.
I've gone to look at bikes but wouldn't really know any real differences. So FORUM please help:
Ive had a look at this bike at Cooksons Cycles in Whitefield (North Manchester) TREK 1.2 2010 TRIPLE and a few of the TREK 1.0 family.
1) Is £599 a reasonable price for a start up bike? And is that a decent bike model?
2) do I need to get proper footwear/clothing or are my Umbro footy trainers and my United shirt enough? (silly baby questions)
3) Are there any rides happening in the North of Manchester/Lancashire (I think saw a group of you guys up at rivington this past weekend)
I think that will do for now heheheh! Thank you very much for your patience!
I hope I can get the money, to buy my bike and come on a ride and join properly!!!!!
Adam

Hehe. Well happy to head out late and dont have a schedule to stick to. Your bimble will be about my race pace anyway so that could work. And a pint in church inn afterwards sounds great, continue the celebrations

Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz has been suspended for six months after it was ruled that he disrupted an anti-doping test ahead of the World Cup.
Queiroz has previously admitted he was angry that the unannounced early morning tests had disturbed the players and admitted that he used inappropriate language.
Is it only cycling that takes dope testing even vaguely seriously...?

My trail exploring on Monday was most enjoyable. I think much fun could be had playing on the Irwell Trails at night. No HR monitors, no bike computers just roaming around to the pace of the slowest rider and seeing where we end up.........which could be the Church Inn for a refreshing pint before heading off home!!
I may be about for a bimble about on Sunday if you fail to sort anything out. The "may" is all dependent upon the maturity of my mates on Saturday night (Turnbulls & Feeneys are quite low on the scale after drink) and my ability to say "I've had enough beer now thanks", which will also be quite low if we hit Bar Fringe and their fine Belgian selection!!

Unfortunatly not. I want to race less, not more!! More 'bimbling' time at the weekend rather driving all over the north west for a blast with my HR through the roof. Sleepless was great though, more of that please!
I want to run big fat tyres on my commute as the roads (well I say Roads, Palatine Road is no more than a cart track) are shocking and 23mm Gatorskins just don't cut it anymore.

I have got a rare weekend in Mcr and the weather looks pretty good so was thinking of what to do. Im not taking things too seriously at the moment and am quite into exploring new places so im thinking either head to Pendle to ride around there or go off tarmac on one of the trails or sustrans routes, see what i can find. Emphasis being on going somewhere new and a relaxing ride.
There are a couple of rides up for Sunday which look good so maybe Saturday? I realise that all sounds a bit random and unorganised...which it is. I also fancy a lateish start and hopefully lunch somewhere but if anyone wants to join me and help me make up a plan let me know.
BTW - have also been talking with Si B about exploring the Irwell trails from Prestwich a bit now there are quite a few of us living there or nearby. Maybe a weekend or one evening with lights? If any more of the North Manchester massif are up for it, let us know. edited by viv on 02/09/2010

+1 I suppose, was hoping to try and race one of these before the end of the season but looking unlikely
Anyone who regularly helps out at events but doesn't necessarily want to race may want to consider doing the Assistant Commissairing course next time British Cycling run it in the North West. It means we would have a few extra bodies for doing the judging in crits/road races we organise (which is one area where the Ashton crits have been short of people this year)
The course is free (save for your time), no previous experience necessary (as I have shown!), it also means if you want to do more of it you can get involved commissairing road races. Equally if you only do assistant comm duties a couple of times a year for Wheelers races it would still be beneficial to help share the jobs we need to do when down to organise an event (especially over the summer months when things get stretched because there are a lot of events and lots of people away on hols etc).
The Wheelers have had a good presence at the crits this year and it has been profitable for many BC pointswise, so no doubt those that have benefitted will show their appreciation by helping out at what is only one of what has been a summer long programme of races. For anyone who hasn't been down before, it's a good place to come and see what crit racing is all about (whilst stood marshalling by the hairpin )

Sorry didn't see this until today Charles. It's a bit complicated to find unless you've been before, but we use the patch of trees as the warm-up circuit on the playing fields south of Edge Lane. Put 'Hawthorn Road, Trafford' in Google maps and the red A is the patch of trees in the park.
Dave, we were there but didn't see you...left about 7ish to do some runs/ints/singletrack in the woods opp Chorlton Water Park.
I'm away next week but Si C and Scott W are running the session so it will be meeting at Ken Fosters at 6.30 next Wednesday as usual. I'll put on the rides list.
See you in a fortnight!

I think that's 7th September i.e. next tuesday, not December.
I was intending to race this one and any others necessary in the pursuit of points, but I will make myself available to Marshall something else, probably the cross race.
Another good show from the Wheelers on Tuesday night with 3 placing in the Top 10.
